COLOR FENG SHUI IS A THING, AND IT CAN IMPROVE YOUR HOME
Expert Rodika Tchi explains what it means to color feng shui your space and why you should try it.
If you thought that the only things you really need to consider when planning your space’s color scheme are 1) can you live with it and 2) do these colors clash? Think again.
Before committing to an all-white living room or a hot pink bedroom, bear in mind the art of feng shui.
As we learned from Rodika Tchi, who has been consulting in feng shui since 1999 and practicing it for most of her life, there’s more to it than just arranging furniture.
So what exactly does it mean to feng shui a space by color, and is it really worthwhile? Tchi answers our questions about feng shui, the use of color, and how it can improve your home.
ELLE Decor: What is the purpose of feng shui?
Rodika Tchi: The main goal of feng shui is to help each space rediscover joy, beauty and balance.
ED: How does this apply to color?
RT: The use of color is very important in feng shui because each color is an expression of one of the five elements – wood, earth, fire, water, and metal. It can bring balance, harmony, and good energy to one’s space.
ED: What are the major benefits of decorating by the rules of color feng shui?
RT: It is not just about the visual beauty, as I see so many beautiful interiors with very weak or even plain bad feng shui. It is about creating good energy that is needed, and this is where a skillful use of color brings enormous benefits – living in a space that has vibrant, healthy energy, and is nourishing for you and your relationships.
ED: Are there certain colors that promote better energy flow? Or ones that should be avoided?
RT:Yes, for sure! Based on your year of birth, let’s say you are a fire element person – creative, active – for you, a predominantly water element environment – blue, black, lots of mirrors – is something to avoid. Why? Because water puts down the fire.
ED: If someone was planning to color feng shui a space, what tips would you give them?
RT: Start by listening to the space and seeing what colors it needs. Then, look at the feng shui guidelines. For example, an east facing room is treated very differently in feng shui than a north facing one because each direction needs a specific element in order to thrive energetically. Then, of course, play and experiment until you choose only what makes your heart jump for joy!
